I just came across the spiritualist, Joel Goldsmith, and have to say that I am really impressed that a person living in the late nineteenth / early twentieth century could have such an advanced understanding of spirituality. Goldsmith speaks of God, and does so in a way that recalls Jesus without being "religious".
I have only just found Goldsmith, but felt it pertinent to share his contributions here. What he was saying almost seventy years ago is just as fresh and applicable today. Here is a brief on Goldsmith from spiritsite.com,

Joel Goldsmith
Many people consider Joel Goldsmith to be one of the most inspired spiritual healers and Christian mystics of the 20th century. For many years, Mr. Goldsmith devoted himself to silently praying with people and writing about the insights he received. By the end of his life, he had prayed with -- and assisted in the healing of -- thousands of people. Joel Goldsmith teaches that God is present within us, and that we need simply open ourselves to that Presence. Nearly all his books focus on themes of healing and prayer.
The Art of Spiritual Healing
In The Art of Spiritual Healing, Joel Goldsmith focuses on how to effectively pray, and how to help those who may need prayerful help and healing. The Art of Spiritual Healing forwards the idea that well-being results naturally from attaining an awareness of God's presence. In this excerpt, he expresses the idea that everyone can benefit from spiritual healing, regardless of one's current situation in life.
Living the Infinite Way
Joel Goldsmith called his collective teachings "The Infinite Way," and Living the Infinite Way is a clear synthesis of his ideas. The book focuses on reaching an awareness of the presence of God through prayer and meditation, and includes many references to the Bible. Mr. Goldsmith explores the ideas of God as Love, as Law, and as Oneness. "Joel Goldsmith writes with a confidence of experience and the awareness that a long series of mystical writers have proclaimed substantially the same message," wrote the Chicago Tribune in a review.
The Art of Meditation
Joel Goldsmith's teachings centered on the importance of contact with God -- through prayer and meditation. In The Art of Meditation, Mr. Goldsmith focuses on the practice of prayer, the experience of the presence of God, and the fruits of such a practice. "A book which will endure along with other great spiritual books," said the Dayton Journal-Herald in an original review.
